Common Sense Media CEO James P. Steyer Applauds Anthropic's Call to Slow Down AI Development
San Francisco, Sept. 12, 2026 - James P. Steyer, Founder and CEO of Common Sense Media, applauded Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei today for calling for a slow down in the development of AI. Steyer issued the following statement.
"Dario Amodei is right. Period.
We must slow down the development of AI and make it safe for everyone.
The only way this will happen is if international governments, industry and civil society engage on what is now the most pressing issue of our time -- whether AI will control us or whether we will control it.
Dario Amodei and others are warning us that the technology is now out of control. We must listen to them.
This is not just an issue for kids and families, although they are certainly most at risk. This is an issue that affects all of humanity and calls for immediate global action. Again, safety is paramount.
Common Sense Media recently launched the first-ever Youth AI Safety Institute because we wholeheartedly agree that the runaway pace of development of AI poses an existential threat to us all and we must come together now to slow it down.
The 'AI arms race' is too often considered a race between one country and another, or one tech company versus another. That misses the point. This is about humanity and our children and grandchildren's future. We must immediately consider how we quickly can slow down the pace of development before it is too late so that it benefits humanity rather than harm humanity. That is what Amodei and other leading experts are saying, and that is what everyone who cares about the world's kids and families should agree on. "
