Statement on Passage of the Children's Online Safety Act in Illinois

SAN FRANCISCO, June 3, 2026—Common Sense Media Founder and CEO James P. Steyer issued the following statement on the passage of the Children's Online Safety Act in Illinois, which Governor Pritzker has committed to signing into law:

"Common Sense Media commends Illinois for enacting strong protections for kids online. The Children's Online Safety Act is intended to hold tech companies accountable for some of the most pressing challenges facing young people in the digital world, including by limiting addictive design features, implementing age assurance that works, and requiring safety by default for minors. Parents in Illinois and across the country have been calling for this kind of accountability for years. We applaud the Illinois legislature for passing the bill and Governor Pritzker for his commitment to signing it into law. We urge all states to adopt these critical protections for kids and teens online."
