Bruce Reed

Bruce Reed is Head of AI at Common Sense Media. He was recently named to TIME Magazine’s 2025 TIME100 AI list for his work to advance youth AI safeguards at the state, federal, and international level.

From 2021 to 2025, he was President Biden’s Deputy White House Chief of Staff for Policy. Dubbed Biden’s “AI Whisperer” by Politico, he served as the President’s top policy adviser and led the administration's efforts on AI safety and development.

Reed has served as a top White House policy adviser in three administrations, including as Chief of Staff to Vice President Biden, Assistant to President Obama, Executive Director of the bipartisan Simpson-Bowles Commission on Fiscal Responsibility, and Domestic Policy Adviser to President Clinton.

As a senior adviser to Common Sense Media, he was a lead negotiator in crafting the landmark California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018, the nation's first comprehensive consumer privacy law. Along with Jim Steyer, he was a contributing author of the bestselling 2020 anthology, Which Side of History? How Technology Is Reshaping Democracy and Our Lives.

Reed also served as the first president of the Broad Foundation. He has been a columnist for Slate and The New Republic and was the author, with Rahm Emanuel, of The Plan: Big Ideas for America. He is a graduate of Princeton and Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. Reed is a native of North Idaho, the son of a former Idaho Senate Minority Leader, and a member of the Idaho Hall of Fame.
