Jill Murphy

Chief Content Officer

Jill Murphy has been with Common Sense Media since its early days, joining in January 2005 to help build the editorial department alongside founding editor-in-chief Liz Perle. Now serving as Chief Content Officer, she oversees the organization's extensive ratings and reviews across all media channels—movies, streaming, TV, games, websites, apps, and books—as well as the content strategy for parenting advice.

Throughout her nearly two-decade tenure, Jill has been instrumental in evolving Common Sense Media's approach to keep pace with rapidly changing technology and family needs, continuously refining the rating process, and ensuring the latest research on kids and media is woven into every review and piece of advice. From the early concerns about screen time to today's complex questions surrounding artificial intelligence and digital privacy, she has watched the media landscape transform while helping families navigate each new challenge.

Jill has been involved in countless product launches while keeping her team on track to produce thousands of new reviews and hundreds of recommendation lists each year.

Her commitment to helping families make informed media choices comes with a confession: Jill's expertise in identifying questionable content for kids stems partly from her devotion to reality TV, late '80s/'90s sitcoms, and what she claims is "research" into pop culture trends. She holds a BA in broadcast and electronic communication arts from San Francisco State University, with an emphasis on writing and media literacy.
